Moving From Big Homes to Small Homes: A Must Know on Downsizing

Moving from one house to another can be exhausting, especially if the new house you’re going to move into is a bit smaller than what you were used to. But if you would look at it, it’s really not all bad because you’ll get to properly think which of the current belongings you have are actually useful, and which ones are not. You’ll get to have a wider point of view on just how much downsizing you need to do to be able to adjust to your new living space.

But what is downsizing?

what is downsizing

Downsizing is when you permanently put away the things you have that are not really useful in order for you to make more space for the things that are actually useful to keep or take with you. It is usually done by people who move from a big home to a smaller home. This isn’t really applicable to people who move to bigger homes because why would you downsize when you’ve got more space to store your things in, right?

Some people, for instance, opt to downsize because their children grew up, they’ve already retired, to cut costs on home maintenance, want to live a simpler life, etc.

How is downsizing different from decluttering?

downsizing vs. decluttering

Both downsizing and decluttering have something to do with clearing up space, so that you can store things that are more necessary. They would seem similar in that aspect, but they are actually different in terms of their purpose. Decluttering is more of a regular thing that you must do in order for you to keep things clean and organized at home. Though we don’t always make it as regular as possible, we do decluttering so that we can avoid unnecessary things at home from piling up. But when you downsize, it travels with you. Why do we say that? You need to downsize first before you go and move to a smaller space, so whatever belongings you decide to bring with you as you move are the ones that will travel with you in your new home.

Why should I downsize?

  • Downsizing helps you to be more practical in choosing the things that are suited for your new living space. You’ll be able to set limits on the items you keep and purchase because there is a space limit you have to consider.
  • When you downsize, you move to a smaller home, which would mean that there would also be less upkeep for you. It helps you improve your lifestyle and save money for other things rather than just spending it all on bills and maintenance of a big house.
  • Having a big house is nice because you get to have more storage space and more room for activities with your family. But it gets sad when not all the rooms get to be occupied because the members of the family left and got a house for themselves. That’s why in this case, downsizing is a good option because you wouldn’t have to worry about having to keep up with an empty big house.
  • Like decluttering, downsizing is also good for a person’s emotional and mental state because you don’t only get to throw out unnecessary things, but you also get to leave them behind and move to another place where you can start fresh.

In the event that you’ve already downsized, and you still have a lot of things you want to bring and keep, but don’t have that much space to store them in your new house; you can opt to rent a self-storage space unit for the things that you still want to store. It has a reasonable cost at the same time you only pay the space you will consume.

Why shouldn’t I downsize?

  • If you’re not up to moving and living in a smaller house, then downsizing is not for you. We understand that this will be hard for people who have gotten used to living in a bigger space for a long period of time. That’s why, you really have to think hard if you’re going to downsize.
  • If you have storage issues, downsizing wouldn’t be the best option for you.
  • You don’t need to downsize if you’re still happy and content with the house that you’re living in.

Downsizing isn’t just moving to a smaller house to change the environment and live a simpler life. It has both advantages and disadvantages that you have to know and understand. It becomes an advantage if you completely open yourself up to the idea of actually putting away a lot of things to be able to live outside of what you’ve been used to. And it’s a disadvantage if you do it without fully understanding the changes it will bring. This is why downsizing is a practical decision that a homeowner should make.
